Random chat, and how to have a good one

Random chat means you are paired with one stranger at a time and see where it goes. Here is how it works on Strangerhood, what tends to make a conversation worth having, and what to do when it is not.

Free to chat · No video or voice calls · No ads · 18+

How a random chat works here

You press start and are paired with one other person (the service is 18+). You can add interests first, and the pairing prefers people who share them. A same-language preference helps you land with someone who writes the way you do, and it never makes you wait. You each appear as a handle. Either of you can leave at any time.

What makes a first message work

Ask something specific rather than "hi": what they are reading, what they ate, what their week looks like. Say one thing about yourself so the question is easy to answer. If it clicks, keep going; if it does not, leaving politely is fine and nobody has to explain themselves.

When it goes wrong

Banter and swearing are fine; hate and abuse are not. Blocking someone is instant and permanent, and a report goes to a person who reads the reported exchange. Messages are also screened as they are sent, in seven languages, by models on our own servers. That catches a lot but not everything, so use block and report. More on the safety page.

What random chat is not

It is not video roulette and not a dating app: there are no video or voice calls and no swiping, though signed-in users can send voice messages. If a conversation is good, you can keep it: chats you both take part in are saved, and you can add each other as friends. If you prefer to skip the camera entirely, read chat without a camera; for other kinds of stranger chat, see stranger chat.

Is matching running right now?

Matching can be paused while we work on it. When it is, new chats are switched off and you see a notice after you press start; your saved chats and friends still work. Strangerhood is new (2026) and small, so some hours are quiet and a pairing is not guaranteed at any given moment.

Frequently asked questions

What is random chat?

A way to talk with a stranger you are paired with by chance, one person at a time. On Strangerhood it is text-first, with no video calls, and you can add interests to start with something in common.

Is random chat free?

Chatting on Strangerhood is free and has no ads. An optional Premium subscription is coming soon; chatting and the safety tools stay free.

Can I skip someone I do not want to talk to?

Yes. You can leave at any time, and you can block or report the other person. Blocking is instant and permanent.

Do I have to be 18?

Yes, adults only. UK users do a one-time on-device facial age estimate before their first chat; other regions follow the standard their law requires, and an under-18 answer is refused.
